Mumbai: In the aftermath of the 26/11 tragedy, survivors narrated instances of how hotel staff displayed exceptional courage in saving the lives of their guests albeit in an unorganised fashion. If some educationists in the city have their way, future hotel employees will be better equipped to deal with such trying situations, thanks to what they will learn in their colleges and institutes before they are inducted.
“If a repeat of this incident is to happen in the future we should make sure that the staff that are employed are not caught off guard. The module that we intend to incorporate in the syllabi will teach potential employees to keep their wits and deal with such situations in an effective and systematic fashion,” says Vithal Kamat, course committee member of both the Mumbai University and the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education, Kamat is also the director of the Kamat group of hotels which owns the Orchid Hotel.
The special module is also envisioned to include a clear set of guidelines and instructions on how to safeguard hotel premises during normal day-to-day operations. “Earlier syllabi emphasised only on how to deal with fire when it came to disaster management. The new module will include earthquakes and terrorist strikes. It will also stress on having a thorough knowledge of the layout of the building and how an evacuation of guests should be organised in times of crisis,” added Kamat.
Among other things, the module will include a list of forbidden areas and dangerous areas in hotel buildings and how curious guests or outsiders should be kept away from these areas. It will also stress on knowing where close circuit cameras are installed in the building and how to retrieve and read the tapes from them. Prospective staff will also be trained on how to be vigilant while working and keep a close watch on those loitering in the hotel premises.
“Since food is continuously being doled out from hotel kitchens, it is of utmost importance to guard against attempts to poison food. Hence students will be taught about biological and chemical agents that maybe used to poison food and how to recognise them,” says Kamlesh Barot, another course committee member, who is also the director of the Encore Group of Hotels.
To prevent the stocking of dangerous materials in hotel premises, the module will have a special mention of how to inspect things that come in from the rear entrances of hotels as provisions and also the safe areas within the building.
For the hotel industry that has been scarred by the recent terror strikes, this move by educationists will churn out an efficient workforce that will hopefully make city hotels a little bit more safer.
